World wood production growth due to biomass and construction

According to the latest data from FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), timber production has grown for the sixth consecutive year. This increase is due to growth in Asian markets, increased construction in North America and the expansion of bio-fuels.
The production of wood based panels worldwide has seen an increase, and especially OSB (oriented strand board), which is the main type of panel used in building in North America, which has done so by 7%, the highest increase since the global economic crisis. Traditional board types and lumber have also increased, but by 3.5%.
This is explained as the real estate market is beginning to recover and the use of greener materials is being encouraged in the construction, so that the expansion of this type of materials has reached the European market, Russia and is making its Incursion into Asian markets.
The demand for pellets has also been due to the European Union’s renewable energy policies, so that its production has increased tenfold in recent years and is expected to continue to grow steadily for the next few years.
As for producing and exporting countries, the United States, the Baltic States as a whole (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Canada and Germany top the list.
The European market is the great consumer of them, so that the United Kingdom, Denmark and Italy together account for approximately 80% of pellet exports worldwide.
On the other hand, worldwide paper production has been reduced due to the increasing importance of digital media and the increasing use of recovered paper, which already accounts for 55% of total paper production , Returning to production values of the 1990s.
According to this study the great growth potential of the forestry sector and the great capacity of adaptation to the new demands of the international markets can be one of the basic pillars of the bio-economy.
